University of Galway Senior Women’s

The University of Galway Women’s Rugby Team (formerly NUI Galway) was established during the 2002–2003 season, marking an important step in the development of women’s rugby at the university. The team is closely associated with UCG R.F.C. and was officially formed following the arrival of a new rugby development officer who helped lay the foundations for the club’s growth and long-term success.

Although founded in the 2002–2003 season, the team played its first official match in 2004 against Sligo I.T., a significant milestone that marked the beginning of its competitive journey. From these early beginnings, the squad steadily built a reputation for determination, teamwork, and resilience within university rugby.

One of the team’s first major achievements came in the 2008/2009 season when they won the Connacht League, establishing themselves as a strong force in provincial competition. Their success continued at the national level with victories in the Irish Universities Rugby Union Kay Bowen Intervarsity Cup in the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 seasons. These back-to-back triumphs highlighted the team’s strength, consistency, and growing presence in intervarsity rugby.

In recent years, the University of Galway Women’s Rugby Team has continued to build on this proud tradition. Since 2021, they have won the Student Sport Ireland (SSI) Tier 2 League three times and lifted the Cup twice, demonstrating sustained excellence and competitive ambition.

Our Women’s Rugby team is one of the club’s most successful sides, competing at a high level in the Connacht Senior Women’s League and proudly representing the University of Galway with passion and pride. Today, the team stands as a testament to dedication, resilience, and the continued growth of women’s sport, inspiring future generations of players both on and off the field.
