University of galway Men’s U20S

The University of Galway Rugby Club Under‑20s Programme is built to develop talented young players and prepare them for the demands of Senior Rugby. The focus is on providing a structured, supportive, and competitive environment where players can grow technically, physically, and mentally while proudly representing the University at a high level.

Competing in the JP Flannigan competition, our U20 squad is given the platform to test itself against strong provincial opposition. This competition plays a key role in helping players refine their skills, gain valuable match experience, and transition smoothly into Senior rugby.

The 2025/2026 season marked a major milestone for the programme as the U20S entered Student Sport Ireland (SSI) competitions for the first time. The squad made an immediate statement, capturing the SSI Tier 3 League title and then securing the Tier 2 Cup in the same season. These achievements highlight the ambition, depth, and growing strength of the programme, as well as the commitment of both players and coaches.

Today, the U20 section stands as a central pillar of the club’s long‑term structure. It provides meaningful competitive opportunities at both provincial and intervarsity level, while also serving as a clear and proven pathway into Senior rugby. With continued investment in player development, performance standards, and progression pathways, the U20S programme remains firmly focused on building for the future while upholding the proud traditions of University of Galway Rugby.

Player Perspective- Rory O’Connor

“Joining the college's U20S rugby club was the single best decision I made in 1st year. When I came to Galway, I knew absolutely nobody and hadn’t played rugby for about a year. So I was kind of nervous, but in the first session, the team welcomed me in like a brother. After a week of training, we had our first game… which we lost. Fortunately, we all went out for food and beers with the Senior men's and women's teams in Screenes, the club’s sponsor.

I had never felt more a part of a team than I did when I joined this club, where I made friends who hopefully will last me until the end of college! During the season, we usually have our club games on a Sunday, when we either travel together or play in Dangan and go out afterwards. As I live in Cork, I had to make a little sacrifice and stay up in Galway a few weekends, but it was totally worth it. We then play our college games in the SSI competition on Wednesdays, in which we won the league and cup this year! 💪

Overall, I think if you are coming to study in Galway and play rugby, it would be stupid not to join the college team.”
